MCP Server for AI Tools
The Sales Layer MCP Server connects Sales Layer product data with AI clients and automation tools that support the Model Context Protocol, also known as MCP.
This allows compatible AI assistants, IDEs and workflow platforms to interact with Sales Layer catalog data through a standard protocol, without needing to build a custom integration from scratch.
AI-assisted access to product data
The MCP Server works as a secure bridge between your PIM catalog and external AI tools. It allows supported clients to query information from Sales Layer, analyze product data and help users work with catalog information using natural language.
For example, users can ask an AI assistant to find products with missing attributes, review product descriptions, compare catalog data, prepare quality checks or identify information that needs to be enriched.
Sales Layer remains the central source of product information. The MCP Server does not replace the PIM. It extends how teams can interact with PIM data from supported AI and automation tools.
Read-only and full access modes
The MCP Server can be used in different access modes depending on what the connected tool is allowed to do.
Read-only mode allows the connected client to query and analyze catalog data without modifying the PIM. This mode is recommended for catalog audits, reports, data exploration and first tests with AI tools.
Full access mode allows the connected client to read data and perform allowed write actions, depending on the available tools and permissions. This mode is recommended only when AI-assisted workflows need to create, update or enrich catalog data.
Supported tools
The Sales Layer MCP Server is designed for MCP-compatible tools. Depending on the client and the version available in each account, it can be used with tools such as Claude, Microsoft Copilot Studio, ChatGPT, OpenAI-compatible tools, Google Gemini, Cursor, VS Code and other MCP-compatible clients.
Each client has its own setup flow, so users should follow the specific connection instructions for the tool they want to use.
Security and authentication
The remote Sales Layer MCP Server uses OAuth authentication for MCP connections. During setup, the AI client opens a Sales Layer authorization screen where the user enters the Catalog Token. After validation, the client receives the access it needs to connect to the MCP Server.
The Catalog Token should be handled as sensitive information and should only be entered in the official Sales Layer authorization screen or in approved local installation flows.
MCP Server and REST API
The Sales Layer MCP Server and the Sales Layer REST API are related, but they are not the same thing.
The MCP Server is recommended when an AI client or automation tool needs to use Sales Layer tools through the Model Context Protocol. The REST API is recommended for direct technical integrations that call Sales Layer API endpoints from a custom application or workflow.
