Create an Attribute Set

Modified on Tue, 12 May at 4:23 PM

In Sales Layer, an Attribute Set is the form structure that defines which fields a product will use. This is useful when different types of products need different information.

When creating an Attribute Set, the goal is to set up a new structure for products. If you need to change an Attribute Set that already exists, that should be handled in the updating article instead.

Ways to create an Attribute Set

There are two main ways to create an Attribute Set in Sales Layer:

  • create it during product import
  • create it directly from the page where Attribute Sets are managed

Use the import route when you are already loading products and want Sales Layer to create the Attribute Set as part of that process. Use the Attribute Sets page when you want to prepare the structure first and assign products afterwards.

Create an Attribute Set during import

If you want to create the Attribute Set while importing products:

  1. Go to Products in the left-hand menu.
  2. Click Import, or open Actions > Import products.
  3. Choose your import format, such as Excel, CSV, or XML.
  4. Make sure your file includes a column for Attribute Set.
  5. Enter the name of the new Attribute Set for the products that should use it.
  6. Complete the import process.

If the Attribute Set name does not already exist, Sales Layer creates it automatically. If the field is empty, the products are imported without an Attribute Set.

Create an Attribute Set from the Attribute Sets page

You can also create an Attribute Set directly in Sales Layer from the page where Attribute Sets are managed.

Go to the area where your Attribute Sets are listed, then use the option to create a new one. This route is useful when you want to build the structure first before assigning any products to it.

Create the structure of the Attribute Set

Once the Attribute Set exists, you can start building its form structure. When editing an Attribute Set, Sales Layer lets you:

Add the first fields

Once the Attribute Set has been created, you can start defining the fields that will belong to it.

When setting up the first structure, you can create new fields or reuse fields that already exist in other Attribute Sets. Reusing existing fields is useful when different product structures share common information, such as brand, materials, dimensions, or logistics data.

Organize the form with tabs and sections

After creating the Attribute Set, you can organize its form so it is easier to use.

To add a tab from the form editor:

  • Open a product that uses the Attribute Set, or go to Edit forms under Actions

        OR

  • Click Actions > Redesign form if you are entering through a product form.

You can also create sections inside a tab to group related fields together. Tabs help separate broader blocks of information, while sections help organize related fields within the same tab.

Keep the basic fields in the first tab

When building the form, some basic fields must stay in the first tab, Basic Information.

These include the Attribute Set field, product name, product reference, category reference, product image, and description.

Assign products to the new Attribute Set

After creating the Attribute Set, you can assign products to it manually or through import.

If you create products manually and your account already uses Attribute Sets, select the correct Attribute Set before editing the product form. This ensures the product uses the right field structure from the start.

Think about variants when creating the structure

Attribute Sets apply to products and their variants, but not to categories.

Variants inherit the Attribute Set of their parent product, so when creating a new structure, it is important to think about whether the same form will also work for any related variants.

Export and reuse the structure

If you want to reuse the new Attribute Set in another setup, Sales Layer allows you to export it, or part of it, to an XLY file.

To export the configuration, go to Edit forms > Actions > Export configuration

Similarly, to import a configuration, go to Edit forms > Actions > Import configuration

When exporting, you can choose which fields to include. When importing it again, you can choose which parts of the configuration you want to reuse.

This is useful when you want to standardize similar product structures without building each one from scratch.

Common Use Cases

  • Create different product forms for different product types
  • Create an Attribute Set automatically during a product import
  • Prepare a new form structure before loading products
  • Reuse the same structure across several Attribute Sets
  • Create a form that also works well for variants

Best practices

Before creating a new Attribute Set, check whether you really need a separate structure or whether an existing one can already cover that product type. Keep the structure clear from the beginning, group related fields into tabs or sections, and avoid creating more Attribute Sets than necessary. This makes the catalog easier to manage as it grows.
